PinRoute is a visual itinerary planner and will available on the App Store for iPhone in February 2012.
Itinerary Route and Collection Pins
Map Action Menu
PinRoute is an itinerary builder and planner. The main goal is to create a route from your current position to points of interest. For example, you may be going to the bank, then to lunch, then to a meeting, then to the grocery store. With PinRoute you can mark each location with a numbered pin and see a route from each location to the next. PinRoute can optimize the route between your current location and the last itinerary location, giving you a better route, saving you time and money.
PinRoute can save itineries so you do not have to re-plan common routes. Further, PinRoute can save the pins in named collections so you do not have to repeat searches. Here's an example: you reach your bank and decide that you'd like to go to different restaurant for lunch. Instead of searching for a nearby restaurant, you can open your collection of restaurant pins and drop the ones that are local to your current position. Then you can add one of those to your itinerary and your route will re-adjust to incorporate the new location.
When you first start PinRoute you see a map, centered on your current position. You can add pins to the map in one of three ways:
Press and hold your finger briefly on the map and a purple pin will drop.
Pick the Search button at the bottom of the screen and enter an address or place name. Red pins will drop into all of the places that match.
Tap the Map Action button (lower right corner) to display the Map Action menu and then tap "Mark Current Location" to drop a purple pin at your current location.
Once a pin has dropped, tap it to open a caption bubble (if not already) open and pick the blue disclosure button on the bubble. This takes you to the Pin Details screen.
Note: when you are finished searching, either tap the Search button on the map screen or pick Cancel next to the Search entry area. This will remove the red search pins.
On the Pin Details screen you can edit the name of the location and enter any notes. Below the notes area are buttons:
Add to Itinerary: Adds the pin to the current itinerary, changing the pin to a numbered pin.
More Itineraries: Displays a list of previously saved itineraries so you can add the pin to one of those.
Hide Pin on Map: Removes the pin from the map, but does not delete it. You can put the pin back onto the map using the "All Pins" collection.
Collections: Displays a list of saved collections. You can add the pin to one or more saved collections. The pin will change to the pin color representing the first collection selected.
Delete Pin: Permanently erases the pin, removing it from all itineraries and collections.
Tap "Map" to return to the map view.
Working with Itineraries
Itineraries are collections of pins with a specific order. There is always an active itinerary; the default itinerary is called, "My Itinerary". To work with an itinerary, tap the Itinerary icon on the map screen. The list of itineraries will slide into view. On this screen you can:
Tap an itinerary's name to display the pins in the itinerary.
Add a new itinerary.
Edit the itinerary list to delete an itinerary or re-order the list.
Tap an itinerary's blue disclosure button to see details about the itinerary.
Working with an Itinerary
When you tap an itinerary's name, the pins composing the itinerary slide into view and are presented as a numbered list. From this screen you can:
Tap a pin to place the pin onto the map. If the itinerary is the active itinerary, the map will display and focus on the pin. If the itinerary is not active, you are presented with a choice: either switch to this itinerary or add the pin to the active itinerary (the pin is not removed from the itinerary you are viewing).
You can switch to the itinerary and make it active or, if the itinerary is already active, quickly switch to the map, zoomed to show the entire itinerary.
Clear the itinerary and remove the pins. The pins are not permanently deleted nor are they removed from any collections of which they are members.
Edit the itinerary list to remove individual pins or to re-order the interary.
Tap a pin's blue disclosure button to edit its details (see Pin Details).
Adding a New Itinerary
When looking at the list of Itineraries, you can add a new itinerary by tapping the Add button in the lower left of the screen. The Add Itinerary screen will slide into view. Enter the itinerary's name and, optionally, a sub-title for more details. Tap Done when you want to save the itinerary (or tap "Itineraries" if you do not wish to create the itinerary).
Editing an Itinerary
When you tap an itinerary's blue disclosure button you are taken to the Itinerary Detail screen. On this screen you can:
Change the name of the itinerary.
Change the sub-title of the itinerary.
Show the itinerary (which makes it active).
Delete the itinerary (which does not delete the pins, just the itinerary).
Creating a Route
Once you have several pins in an itinerary you can have PinRoute display a route from your current location to each itinerary pin. When you are viewing the map, tap the Action menu button in the lower right corner to display the Map Action menu.
The top portion contains route controls:
Select the type of route: Driving, Walking, or Bicycling.
Enable or disable the use of toll roads.
Enable or disable the use of highways.
Enable or disable route optimization.
Once you have the options set, tap "Calculate Route". The map will display and a route will appear shortly (the delay depends on the network connection).
While a route is active you can change the itinerary and the route will automatically re-calculate. You can turn off the route by going back to the Map Action menu and tapping "Cancel Route". You can also change the settings and tap "Update Route".
The Map Action Menu
Below the route controls on the Map Action menu are some additional controls:
Tap "Mark Current Location" to quickly drop a pin at your current location. You can then use the Pin Details screen to add the pin to the current itinerary or to collections.
Tap "Hide Non-Itinerary Pins" to clean up the map and leave just the pins associated with the current itinerary.
Change the map display to Map, Satellite, or Hybrid (Map and Satillite together).
Tap the background of the screen to cancel the Map Action menu without doing or changing anything.
Working with Collections
You'll find that collections work the same way as itineraries, except the order of the pins does not matter. There are several ways to add a pin to a collection:
Tap the pin on the map and then tap its blue disclosure button on the bubble. This switches to the Pin Details screen. Tap "Collections" and then select the collections in which you want the pin.
From any list of pins, such as an itinerary list or a collection list, tap the pin's blue disclosure button to bring up Pin Details and tap "Collections" to enter the pin into one or more collections.
Tap the "Collections" button on the map screen to bring up the list of collections, tap the "All Pins" collection (or any other collection), find the pin you want, and tap its blue disclosure button to display the Pin Details screen. Then tap "Collections" and enter the pin into one or more collections.
You manage collections by tapping the Collections button on the map screen. This displays the Collections screen where you can:
Tap a collection's name to see all of the pins in that collection.
Add a new collection.
Import your address book.
Tap a collection's blue disclosure button to view or edit a collection's details.
Tap "Edit" to remove any custom collections. Removing a collection will not remove any of its pins permanently nor will will the pins be removed from any itineraries. Note that the "All Pins" and "Favorites" collections cannot be deleted.
Adding a New Collection
You can add a new collection when you are either selecting collections for a pin via Pin Details or from the Collection list screen. Tap the Add button in the lower left of the screen and the Add Collection screen will slide into view.
On the Add Collection screen you can enter a title for the collection and an optional sub-title. Tap "Done" to save the collection; tap "Collections" to cancel adding a new collection.
When a collection is added it will be given a color and a push-pin shape. Whenever a pin is added from the collection it will display as the colored push-pin, helping you distinguish different places on the map.
When you tap a collection's blue disclosure button you will open the Collection Details screen. On this screen you can:
Change the title and sub-title of the collection
Show or hide all of the pins in this collection that appear on the map. Note that if a pin in the collection is part of the current itinerary it will remain visible on the map (and display as a numbered pin, not a colored push-pin).
Delete the collection. All of the pins in the collection will be removed from the collection but will not be deleted. If a pin is not a member of any other collection nor part of an itinerary, it will be displayed as a purple pin when shown on the map.
List of Pins
When you tap the name of a collection in the Collection list, you see all of the pins in that collection. Pins that are showing on the map are flagged either with a purple circle or a green circle if they are in the current itinerary, making it easy for you to identify them. While showing the pins in a collection you can:
Tap a pin's name to see it on the map. If the pin is not already on the map it will be added. The map will focus on this pin.
Tap "All Pins" to have all of the pins added to the map. The map will zoom to show all (or most) of the pins.
Tap "Local Pins" to have just the pins of the collection that are visible in the map region currently shown added to the map.
Tap "Hide All Pins" to have all of the pins in this collection removed from the map (unless they are part of the current itinerary).
Tap a pin's blue disclosure button to go to Pin Details.
Tap "Edit" to delete pins from the collection. The pins are not permanently deleted, just from this collection.
Importing Your Address Book
Once you tap "Import Address Book" on the Collections list screen, you will see all of the entries in your Address Book.
Tap each entry you would like to add.
Tap "Select Collections" to pick one or more collections, and even add a new collection, into which the selected Address Book entries should be added.
Tap "Import" to begin the import process. A progress bar appears showing you each address being imported. As an address is being imported the location is determined via Google Maps and may take a few seconds, depending on your network connection.
Once all of the selected entries have been imported the Collection List view slides back.
